Duckhorn Napa Valley Merlot 2009

Fundamental to our tradition was the early decision to focus on the production of Merlot. Dan Duckhorn felt that this elegant varietal was under appreciated in North America. "I liked the softness, the seductiveness, the color, the fact that it went with a lot of different foods; It seemed to me to be a wonderful wine to just enjoy. I became enchanted with Merlot."

This wine displays all of the benefits of slow, even ripening during a mild growing season. Though there is fullness and a lush character to this Merlot, there is also restraint and elegance. Promising aromas of cherry, red plum, raspberry, and dried herbs lead to a clean fresh entry with impeccably balanced acidity supporting intense red fruit flavors of cranberry, plum and raspberry. Round, supple tannins provide an enticing framework for the flavors and contribute to a lingering finish.

Clos Du Val Napa Valley Merlot 2008

88% Merlot 12% Cabernet Franc Clos Du Val, French for “small vineyard estate of a small valley,” was founded in 1972 in the now legendary Stags Leap District by American entrepreneur John Goelet and French winemaker Bernard Portet. After a worldwide search to purchase a vineyard property from which to craft world-class wines, 130 acres in Stags Leap and 180 acres in Carneros were chosen, solidifying Clos Du Val’s iconic stature and formidable place in Napa Valley history.
Today, for Head Winemaker John Clews and Assistant Winemaker Kristy Melton, what begins in the vineyards season-after-season represents new opportunities and challenges towards making the distinctive, terroir-driven wines of elegance for which Clos Du Val is known. Full-bodied and deep plum in color, the 2008 Merlot offers aromas of complex black fruit, spice, dark chocolate and a hint of toast. The mouth-feel is warm and rich, with a solid middle and a silky, lingering finish, enabling the wine to pair exceptionally well with roasted meats and poultry, braised beef or pork. Enjoy now and always.

Lockwood Merlot 2008

After a cool morning pick, the fruit was crushed and cold soaked for 48 hours. The must was then inoculated with a yeast strain that encourages a slow fermentation to enhance the aromatic structure of the finished wine. After seven days on the skins, the wine was pressed prior to dryness to obtain an elegant tannin extraction. Our Lockwood Merlot was ready for bottle after 17 months of aging in French oak barrels.

This 2008 Merlot has layers of intense flavors and textures. Aromas of ripe plum, blackberry and tobacco leaf fill the glass. On the palate, the wine offers flavors of dried cranberry, cherry, and black licorice. A silky middle palate, followed by a long toasted oak finish, make this wine a perfect complement to grilled poultry or braised short ribs.

Rex Goliath Merlot

I really love this wine. There is a certain elegance that fits my vision of the perfect Merlot. Very ripe and round, almost like a Jolly Rancher candy. Mouth-filling flavors of plums, cherries and wild red berries dominate from start to finish. Soft, supple and complex. Pretty and seductive with a decidedly spicy nose of black cherry, cassis and cedar. The burst of juicy acidity paired with soft tannins make this a perfect match for game fowl, such as pheasant or duck. My preference is Rock Cornish game hen, if you can catch one!"
